The importance of a true recruitment partnership

Having a strong recruitment partnership dramatically affects not only the placement of a candidate, but ultimately their success after joining an organisation. Understanding the client’s corporate culture, management team, working environment and role progression is key to finding the right candidate for that particular company.

A successful recruitment partner has a responsibility to both candidate and client. They need to ensure that the candidate’s expectations of the role and their career aspirations match what the client can offer. All too often, candidates are not given sufficient insight during the screening/interview process, which inevitably leads to frustration after they join the company. Conversely, the recruitment partner needs to act as an ambassador for the client, being transparent, maintaining the client’s brand integrity and ensuring candidates are joining their organisation for the correct reasons.

Recruitment is a necessity. People come and go as their careers progress and their circumstances change. Clients’ working environments also change as they expand, downsize or relocate.

The question for clients is whether they merely need to fill a vacancy, or whether they need to fill a vacancy with the right person. The right person is someone who will thrive in their environment, grow with the business and help the client to meet their strategic objectives. A mismatched hire leads to disruption, disappointment, wasted resources and a need to repeat the hiring process.

As an experienced recruiter with a successful track record, I have the ability to gain valuable insights into the client’s environment and the candidate’s motivations. This allows me to create client-candidate matches, that are both lasting and mutually beneficial.

About

I have worked in Recruitment and Search for over 20 years. I have covered North America, Europe and MENA, specialising in investment banking, sovereign wealth funds, commercial banking and logistics. I lived in the Middle East for 14 years, the United Kingdom (UK) for seven years, and Germany for two years. I currently reside in my home town: Cape Town, South Africa.

I started my career at Michael Page Finance in London, working on a sales floor of over 100 recruitment consultants. After several years there, I was headhunted to join an international recruitment firm in the UAE. Shortly after I joined, the financial crisis of 2008 hit and our headcount was cut by 50%. I was retained and subsequently promoted to the position of Associate Director. Later, seeking a new challenge in the recruitment process outsourcing (RPO) world, I joined a large US-listed RPO company. Following this, I ran my own recruitment consultancy for five years in the UAE. I then moved to Qatar and worked in HR for Qatar National Bank, the largest bank in MENA. At the onset of Covid, I decided to return home and joined Pemberton Partners, a UK-based search firm. This move enabled me to work remotely from Cape Town. After five rewarding years at Pemberton Partners, I set up my own consultancy called Executive Search Partnership (ESP).

With over 20 years of global recruitment experience, which includes successful placements in major financial centres and a wide network of connections. My key strength is understanding the client’s business, which enables me to find candidates that not only match the clients requirements but can thrive in their working environment.
